1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced or about 3.3 to 4 pages double-spaced. That assumes a standard setup: a 12-point font such as Times New Roman and 1-inch margins. Font, spacing and how you break up paragraphs can move the result by half a page or so, so use these figures as estimates.

Words to pages chart (250 to 5,000 words)

The usual rule of thumb is that a single-spaced page holds roughly 500 to 600 words and a double-spaced page holds roughly 250 to 300. Divide your word count by those numbers and you get the ranges below.

WordsSingle-spaced (approx.)Double-spaced (approx.)
250about ½ pageabout 1 page
300about ½ page1–1.2 pages
500about 1 page1.7–2 pages
7501.25–1.5 pages2.5–3 pages
1,0001.7–2 pages3.3–4 pages
1,2002–2.4 pages4–4.8 pages
1,5002.5–3 pages5–6 pages
2,0003.3–4 pages6.7–8 pages
2,5004.2–5 pages8.3–10 pages
3,0005–6 pages10–12 pages
4,0006.7–8 pages13.3–16 pages
5,0008.3–10 pages16.7–20 pages

The lower number in each range assumes the denser end (600 words per single-spaced page, 300 per double-spaced page); the higher number assumes the looser end (500 and 250). Neither APA, MLA nor Chicago defines how many words make a page, so no chart is official.

Working from a page requirement instead? Our chart on how many words a 5-page essay is runs the same math in the other direction.

How to work it out yourself

You don't need a chart for an unusual number. Use two quick divisions:

  • Double-spaced: words ÷ 300 = fewest pages, words ÷ 250 = most pages
  • Single-spaced: words ÷ 600 = fewest pages, words ÷ 500 = most pages

For 1,800 words double-spaced: 1,800 ÷ 300 = 6 and 1,800 ÷ 250 = 7.2, so expect about 6 to 7 pages. Single-spaced: 1,800 ÷ 600 = 3 and 1,800 ÷ 500 = 3.6, so about 3 to 3.6 pages.

For 1.5 spacing, a common middle option, a page holds roughly 330 to 400 words. That puts 1,000 words at about 2.5 to 3 pages.

What changes the page count

The chart assumes clean essay text. Real documents drift for a few reasons.

Font. At the same point size, some fonts are wider than others. Times New Roman is compact; Arial is noticeably wider and usually adds length. If your instructor names a font, use it.

Spacing. Single vs double spacing changes page count more than anything else, roughly by a factor of two.

Margins. One inch on every side is the standard for school papers. Wider margins shorten every line.

Paragraph breaks and dialogue. Each new paragraph starts with an indent and usually ends partway across a line. Text with lots of short paragraphs, dialogue or bullet points spreads over more pages than solid paragraphs.

Headings and front matter. An MLA heading, a title, section headings, block quotes, tables and figures all take vertical space. A 1,000-word report with five headings and a table can easily run a page longer than a 1,000-word essay.

Handwriting. Handwritten pages vary too much to estimate well. Handwriting size and paper ruling differ from person to person, so if you need a figure for a handwritten exam, count the words on one of your own pages and multiply.

What 1,000 words looks like in practice

A 1,000-word piece is a common length for a short essay, a reflection paper, a scholarship essay at the longer end, or a blog post. In an academic essay, it usually breaks down like this:

PartApprox. words
Introduction100–150
Body paragraphs (3–4)700–800 total
Conclusion100–150

That's enough room for three well-developed points, each with evidence and explanation. It's not enough for a long literature review or more than one counterargument, so keep your thesis focused. If you're working within a five-paragraph essay structure, 1,000 words gives each body paragraph about 230 to 270 words, which is comfortable.

Page count vs word count in assignments

When an assignment gives a word count, that's the real requirement, because it doesn't change with formatting. A page count assumes the standard setup and roughly the ranges above.

Two things to avoid:

  1. Formatting to fill pages. Bumping the font to 12.5 points, widening spacing or adjusting margins is easy to notice and doesn't add anything to your grade.
  2. Padding to fill words. Repeating the thesis, stacking adjectives, or adding filler phrases makes writing weaker. If you're short, add an example, explain your evidence more fully, or address an objection. Our guide on how to increase word count shows how to add depth instead of fluff.

If you're over the limit, cut repetition first. Sentences that restate the previous sentence, long introductions that circle the topic, and conclusions that summarize every paragraph are the usual culprits.

Checking your count

Every major word processor shows a word count, often in the status bar. If you write across several apps, or you want characters, sentences and reading time too, paste the text into a word counter. Then apply the required formatting in your document and check how many pages it actually fills, since that's what your instructor will see.

Key takeaways

  • 1,000 words ≈ 1.7–2 pages single-spaced or 3.3–4 pages double-spaced with a 12-point font and 1-inch margins.
  • Divide by 250–300 for double-spaced pages and by 500–600 for single-spaced pages to estimate any length.
  • Font, spacing, paragraph breaks and headings shift the page count, so check the real document before you submit.
  • When a word count is given, it's the requirement that matters. Fill gaps with substance, not formatting.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 1,000 words double-spaced?

About 3.3 to 4 pages with a 12-point font like Times New Roman and 1-inch margins. A wider font, many short paragraphs or headings push it toward 4 pages or slightly more.

How many pages is 1,000 words single-spaced?

About 1.7 to 2 pages, so a little under two full pages, with a 12-point font and 1-inch margins.

How many paragraphs is 1,000 words?

Often five to ten paragraphs in an essay, since academic paragraphs commonly run 100 to 200 words. Shorter web-style paragraphs can push it past ten. Paragraph count depends on your ideas, not on a quota.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

Roughly four to five minutes of silent reading at a typical adult pace, and closer to seven or eight minutes if you read it aloud as a speech. Dense or technical text takes longer.
